Prof. Jorma Kuparinen received a Ph.D. in Limnology from the University of Helsinki in 1986. He was first employed as a research scientist by the University of Helsinki until 1989. From 1989, Kuparinen worked as a senior scientist and from 1998 as the head of the Department of Biological Oceanography in the Finnish Institute of Marine Research. In 2001, he attained the position of professor in Marine Biology in the University of Helsinki. During the past 20 years Kuparinen has worked in, and led, several research projects, both on national and international levels. The focus of his research has been on the carbon cycle in the pelagic food web, specifically the production and utilization of carbon by autotrophic and heterotrophic micro-organisms. He has connections to many research institutes and universities within the Baltic Sea, around the Northern Atlantic Ocean as well as in the Pacific area. Kuparinen is also familiar with the Southern Ocean through participation in cruises to the Antarctic waters. He has worked as a visiting scientist at the University of Kiel, Germany; Univ. of Algarve, Portugal; Univ. of North Carolina, USA; and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand. Kuparinen has represented Finland in various international organizations, for example, SCOR, ICES, HELCOM, BMB, acting as the chairman, convener, secretary and member of committees and working groups. He has also been chairman for large international scientific meetings arranged in Helsinki, Finland during the past few years (BSSC; SAME-9).
