Venu Ittekkot,

Venu Ittekkot earned a Ph.D. in
Geochemistry from the Hamburg University and a D.Sc. in Biogeochemistry. He is
director at the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology, Bremen, Germany and
Professor at Bremen University since 2000. Between 1992 and 2000, he was head of
the Institute of Biogeochemistry & Marine Chemistry at the Hamburg University.
Ittekkot's research is focused on the fluxes and fate of nutrients and organic
matter in rivers and estuaries, as well as coastal and upwelling systems and has
participated in and/or led about 30 bilateral and multilateral research
expeditions to various marine regions in Europe, South America and Asia. He also
coordinated the German activities within the IGBP-JGOFS Arabian Sea Process
Study. The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology in Bremen currently coordinates
marine research and capacity building programs in several countries in tropical
South America, Southwestern Africa and Southeast Asia. Ittekkot has contributed
to the work of international organizations and scientific committees including
ICSU-SCOPE, IPCC (Second and Third Assessment Reports) as well as to the
capacity-building activities of the UNESCO-IOC, most recently by chairing its
Consulting Group on Capacity Building.
